Purpose:
This course is designed for individuals who are involved in childcare, and meets the requirements of OFSTED, Sure Start, the National Childminding Association, the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, and the UK Resuscitation Guidelines (2010).
We are on the list of first aid providers approved for North Yorkshire Early Years and Childcare providers.
Delivery:
The course is delivered across two days, or in shorter sessions for flexibility. Sessions times can be arranged to meet your needs (weekdays, weekends, daytime or evening). The courses are delivered and assessed by accredited trainers and assessors.

Entry requirements:
Students must be a minimum of 14 years of age and a certificate can be offered to all, subject to assessment. A student cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace for children and infants until they reach the age of 16, and then it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable for that role. The certificate will expire as dated on the certificate, irrespective of age.
Content:
The two day course is split as follows:
Day 1 (Paediatric Emergency First Aid):
Role of the Paediatric First Aider
Primary survey
Secondary assessment
Resuscitation and epilepsy
Airway obstruction
Wounds and bleeding
Anaphylaxis
Day 2 (Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury):
Bones, joints and muscle injuries
Head and spinal injuries
Foreign body and eye injuries
Chronic medical conditions and illnesses
Effects of heat and cold
Electric shock incidents
Burns and scalds
Poisoning
Bites and stings
Assessment and Certification:
Practical assessment is ongoing, and theory assessment is via question papers.
Certification is valid for three years, though an annual updating course is recommended.
All candidates will receive a Paediatric First Aid manual.
