Less than 10% of people in the United Kingdom are first aid trained, so teaching school-aged children how to prevent and treat emergency situations is an important part of promoting first aid.  Developing a child’s first aid skills from an early age will embed this essential skill, and allow all children to grow in confidence.

ASB deliver hands-on and interactive first aid sessions to groups of school children around Scarborough, York and Hull.  The courses are designed to build confidence, whilst developing knowledge and understanding of first aid skills.  The sessions are linked to the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, as follows:

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

This fun and exciting session will teach children basic first aid skills, whilst showing them how to:

  • Look after their own health and safety during an incident
  • Call for help
  • Put someone in the recovery position
  • Help someone who has chest pain
  • Treat minor bleeds and burns

At key stage 2 (Years 3 and 4), children will further develop awareness and understanding of basic first aid skills.  Choking will also be covered.

All children will receive an attendance certificate following the sessions.

Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) and Key Stage 3

ASB will link these sessions to the National Curriculum requirement to recognise and reduce risk, and minimise harm and get help in an emergency situation.  The sessions will aim to enhance knowledge of basic first aid.  The sessions will cover a number of topics, including:

  • First aid kit contents
  • Communication skills and casualty care
  • Primary survey
  • Secondary survey
  • Recovery position
  • Bleeding and shock
  • Foreign objects
  • Choking
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Chest injuries and head injuries

All children will receive an attendance certificate following the sessions.

The sessions can be delivered at a time that suits the schools, and its staff and children.

The message here is that first aid skills are essential from a young age and should be taught in schools.
